Breast Cancer And SSRI’s.
The antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were the subjects of several studies suspecting them to causes of breast cancer. There is a welcome development for patients prescribed with antidepressants as researchers found a gene that can help people cope up stress and depression.
Researchers at the Cancer Care Ontario says that women who used newer-generation SSRIs such as Zoloft areis believed to have a “substantial increase” seven-fold more likely to have breast cancer.
Researchers suggest that this could be because antidepressants affect the enzymes (the proteins that speed up chemical reactions in the body) involved with the metabolism ( the body’s processing) of carcinogens and estrogen, both of which are linked to breast cancer.
It was a case-control study in 1995-1996 conducted by researchers in which they identified 700 women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer at that time and compared them with a random sample of 700 women who had not been diagnosed with breast cancer during that period.
However, until now the research data regarding the use of SSRI and breast cancer is highly controversial, according to the wellness resources website that accuses big pharmaceutical companies of funding “scientists for hire” to cranked out studies that denies the association of the antidepressants and breast cancer, which is a blatant and fraudulent misrepresentation of SSRI risks and benefits.
In an open open-access article published in Plos One21 in April 2011, it talks about reviewed 61 studies associating edthe use of antidepressant with breast cancer.
The overall data showed that there was an 11% increase in risk for breast cancer associated with all types of antidepressants. The association between the SSRI type of antidepressants and cancer was stronger than for any other type of antidepressants and the increase in the risk of cancer among women.
An evaluation about the financial ties of authors to the makers of antidepressant was the subject of the April 2011 study.
Shockingly, none of the 15 researchers with financial ties to the industry found any risk of breast cancer in the studies they conducted, whereas 43 % of the researchers without industry ties found clear evidence of cancer risk. 43% of the researchers without industry ties found clear indication of cancer risk while surprisingly, none of the 15 researchers funded by the industry found any risk of breast cancer in their studies.
Zoloft ,which can cause Zoloft birth defects, is an SSRI antidepressant drug linked with breast cancer is still the subject of several debates and thorough research. Several lawsuits and billions of dollars will be lost if the allegation is proven against pharmaceutical companies.
