Martial arts practice today developed many years ago out of the killing arts of the battlefield that were no longer needed. Martial arts styles such as karate do, taekwondo, or sometimes spelled tae kwon do, developed into more of a way of life that encourages health and wellness through their practice. In Karate this sense of health and wellness is often accomplished through the diligent practice of kata, or translated as formal excercises. Although personal development is the main goal of many martial arts of today, self defense is a side benefit for the martial arts practitioner.
In todays world, the average person does not need to worry about the need for self defense abilities on a daily basis as may have been the case hundreds of years ago. In addition, having a solid understanding of ones own ability to defend ones self is important in the building of self esteem and confidence. The best self defense is to know how powerful you can be, and through the regular practice of martial arts you will encourage that confidence to avoid a potential situation where you will be required to physically defend against an attacker.
There are various styles of martial arts that instruct self defense in slightly varying methods. Karate comes from Okinawa, which today is a part of Japan. Krav Maga is a good example of a martial art that is designed specifically for self defense. In Krav Maga, self defense is the main goal and fitness and health are bi products.
Mixed martial arts practice is becoming very popular due to the ultimate fighting competitions on pay per view. Mixed martial arts training, although not an organized martial art, is still a valuable way to learn self defense skills because of the emphasis on kicking, punching, trapping and grappling training. Preparing you for competition is the main goal of mixed martial arts training, but self defense is definatlty a bi product of this practice. Mixed martial arts practice may be prove too difficult for the average person as this training is designed to develop well conditioned athletes.
