Wrestling - Wrestling Mats - How To Use Them Safely

Wrestling mats are often an important piece of any gym, Martial Arts academy or even home workout space. Due to the level of physical activity that will take place on these mats, it’s very important that you know what you’re looking for and how to get it. When shopping for a wrestling mat it’s very important that you try to find one that offers maximum impact protection. Remember, these mats are designed to protect you and cushion you from injuries. If you don’t choose one with adequate impact protection you could get seriously hurt or even killed.

You never want to purchase these items from anything but a reputable dealer. Another good idea is to always purchase your mats new and unused. Used mats have a tendency to wear and become less and less safe with each successive use. There are a lot of shady dealers out there. Many of them are looking to unload equipment that should’ve been put out to pasture long ago. Occasionally however, you will run into a defunct small wrestling promotion who is looking to unload virtually new equipment for dirt cheap prices.

If your opponents naturally weigh 140 lbs and didn’t have to lose weight at all then you will be bigger than they are even though you may weigh the same. Whether it be taller or thicker than your opponent it comes as an advantage. This is why kids cut weight, and if you don’t and you stay at your natural weight but then you competitors had to cut weight to get to your weight then guess what, they now have an advantage on you. Personally being for cutting weight , many kids go about it the wrong way. Either spitting, sitting in a sauna with hoodies on, or not eating or drinking for a few days, etc. I am even guilty of cutting weight the wrong way. One duel the coaches needed me to get to 140 lbs in a few days. So I did and dropped 12 pounds in less than two days.

Doing this though is not only dangerous to your health, but will also make you too exhausted to wrestle your best. Which can result in a loss and have made all your effort all for not. So if you decide to cut, here are a few wrestling tips to do so safetly. If you need to cut weight you should start a few weeks or a month in advance if needed. Don’t starve yourself, just make sure you eat healthy though or else you will have a tough time cutting weight and not have much energy at all. Also you need to know your limits, your body can handle only so much. Being on a state champion team some wrestlers would develop eating disorders that even during the off season couldn’t get over.

Other gear equipments include knee and elbow pads which protect wrestler’s limbs and joints from getting injured during a fall. These equipments are specially designed so that the wrestler can move without any restriction. Knee and elbow pads are soft and cushiony on the inside and have high flexibility. Though not a requirement in international wrestling, these are definitely helpful in preventing grievous wounds during college level tournaments. Other protective gears include face masks and braces to protect the head region and jockstraps to support the male genitalia. Without these gears, wrestling can become very risky since the sport is known to be dangerously violent at times.
