Another major tip when attempting to set up a winter camp is to always do this in groups or at least one more person. Even experienced campers never set out for a winter camp without a ‘buddy’. This helps keep everyone safe because there’s always someone to watch your back. The buddy system helps make sure that no one gets lost, and that there’s help nearby if anyone gets hurt. Be sure to check that the ice you’re travelling on is thick enough to hold your weight before you commit yourself to it.
