A Safe Pool Doesn’t Need Chlorine
There are several alternative ways to maintain your swimming pool to using swimming pool chlorine granules.
To sanitize their pools many people choose other methods to chlorine because they do not like it’s toxicity and odor. Heavy use of strong chemicals on a regular basis is not environmentally friendly. A non-chlorinated pool feels and tastes better to a lot of people.
Salt Generators
Salt generators convert a tiny bit of added salt in the pool into chlorine. Chlorine need not be routinely added. A treatment with chlorine of other oxidizing chemical will be needed if the pool becomes contaminated. With salt generators the ph tends to get high so it needs to be analyzed regularly. Decrease the ph with muriatic acid.
Because it burns off quickly in sunlight bromine needs to be added more often than chlorine, and is more costly, but it has no bad smell and is nice for delicate skin. Chlorine becomes deactivated when it mixes with harmful contaminants where as bromine continues to work.
Ozone
Ozone, a form of oxygen which is active, reacts with contaminants. Contaminants combine with ozone gas dissolved in water and oxidized them the same way as chlorine. Because it makes them join together, they are easily removed form filters. This allows chlorine use to be decreased by 60% to 90%.
Copper and Silver
That copper kills algae and silver kills bacteria and viruses is well known. They have long been used to clean water. Copper and Silver are ionized by a very small amount of electricity and react with the contaminants in the water destroying them.
They also make the bacteria and algae clump together so they are easier to remove from the filter. A systematic shock of chlorine tabletsor a non-chlorine oxidizer will be needed but routine chlorine usage will be greatly reduced.
Summary
A lot of people turn to alternative pool sanitizers because they are tired of constantly fighting algae, swimming on a regular basis in harsh swimming pool chemicals, and paying for the amount of chemicals needed to keep the pool sanitized. The options are there and a web search will help you find more detailed information if you want to find out more.
